Marvin Carlson holds the Sidney E. Cohn Chair in Theatre Studies and holds a Ph.D. in Drama Texts and Theatre from Cornell University. His extensive research and teaching interests encompass theatre theory and Western theatre history, dramatic literature and translation, particularly of the literature of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.
He has been honored with the ATHE Career Achievement Award, the George Jean Nathan Award, the Bernard Hewitt Award, the George Freedley Award, and a Guggenheim Fellowship. He has held positions as the Walker-Ames Professor at the University of Washington, a Fellow at the Indiana University for Advanced Study, Visiting Professor at Freie Universität Berlin, and Research Fellow of the American Theatre Association. In 2005, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Athens. His seminal work, Theories of the Theatre: A Historical and Critical Survey, from the Greeks to the Present (1993), has been translated into eight languages. His book The Haunted Stage: The Theatre as Memory Machine, published in 2001, was awarded the Calloway Prize. In 2022, he was elected a Fellow of the Arts and Sciences Academy.
